KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC Mbali Shinga addressing the media after tabling her budget at the provincial legislature in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday.
KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC Mbali Shinga said she remains the MPL under court protection after the National Freedom Party (NFP) recently fired her again.
Shinga, who is the NFP’s sole MPL, delivered the department’s more than R3.8 billion budget on Tuesday for the 2026/2027 financial year amid the uncertainty about her future as the MPL and MEC.
Shinga will remain the MEC until her party’s faction, led by its president Ivan Barnes, succeeds in removing her as its MPL.
The faction had on July 16 informed the legislature that it had approached the Pietermaritzburg High Court to force Speaker Nontembeko Boyce to replace Shinga with another party leader.
