The Greek bourse benchmark has returned to 2,500 points, after banks launched an upward move on Tuesday that carried along the entire market. Traders are eager to position themselves ahead of the second-quarter results of lenders at the end of this month, expecting some very positive news for their stock prices. The fact that the main index has moved back up to the 2,500-point level is seen as a crucial step toward averting a medium-term slide for Athinon Avenue, after last week’s losses.

The Euronext Athens (ATHEX) general index closed at 2,500.79 points, adding 2.08% to Monday’s 2,449.91 points. The large-cap FTSE-25 index expanded 2.25% to end at 6,364.29 points.

The banks index jumped 4.29%, as Eurobank surged 6.18%, Piraeus obtained 5.62%, Alpha climbed 4.70%, National grabbed 3.48% and Optima advanced 1.69%. Aktor Holdings parted with 9.98%.

In total, 60 stocks secured gains, 43 endured losses and 18 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to €372.3 million, up from Monday’s €258.3 million.
