The trial of the Govender brothers, who are charged with the 2024 murder of Shailen Singh in uMhlanga, kicked off on Tuesday with testimony from a witness who claimed that one of the accused had previously made threats against him.
Former security boss Ferrel Govender and his brother Darren have both been charged with December 2024 murder of Singh. Ferrel is facing additional counts including attempted murder, assault, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, crimen injuria and other related offences.
Both men pleaded not guilty on Tuesday when the trial got under way in the Durban High Court. The State alleges the murder was motivated by a love triangle involving Ferrel, Singh and a woman known to both of them.
The first witness to be called, whose identity cannot be disclosed, testified that Ferrel threatened him in 2023 following what he described as a misunderstanding during a phone call with Govender’s girlfriend, who had previously been in a relationship with the witness.
