The US just picked a fight with Brazil over how people pay for things. And at the heart of it sits Pix, Brazil’s instant payment system that has quietly become one of the most successful financial products ever launched by a government.

The Trump administration has announced a 25% tariff on Brazilian goods set to take effect on July 22, 2026, with the stated goal of addressing the competitive advantage Pix provides over American card networks like Visa and Mastercard.

Pix’s dominance is hard to overstate

Launched in late 2020 by Brazil’s central bank, Pix now processes more domestic transactions than all credit and debit cards combined. Over 90% of Brazilian adults use it. The average transaction settles in under 10 seconds.

For individuals, transfers are free. For merchants, fees are dramatically lower than what Visa and Mastercard charge. Over 700 Brazilian companies were utilizing Pix for digital payments as of 2024.
