The counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine foiled a double terrorist attack by Russian special services in Ivano-Frankivsk—the Russians had planned to detonate an explosive device in the courtyard of a residential complex in the city center.
According to Ukrinform, the SSU reported this.
“According to the SSU’s counterintelligence, the first explosion was to occur via the remote detonation of a homemade bomb in the parking lot. The second explosion was planned for after emergency services arrived at the scene,” the statement reads.
It has been established that a local unemployed man was involved in preparing the terrorist attack; he came to the attention of Russian intelligence officers while looking for easy money on Telegram channels.
“After receiving instructions from his handlers, the suspect rented an apartment with a view of the site of the planned explosions. He then secretly placed a phone connected to a power bank in the courtyard so that his handlers in Russia could select the site of the future explosion. He subsequently purchased components for improvised explosive devices (IEDs),” the SSU reported.
