Stores across Greece will be open on Sunday, the first Sunday of the summer sales period, although participation is optional. Consumers are advised to check with individual retailers before visiting.
In general, stores can operate from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., though local commercial associations may recommend different schedules. In Athens and Thessaloniki, suggested hours are 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., while department stores, shopping malls and large retail chains are expected to remain open until 8:00 p.m.
Retailers are hoping strong tourist arrivals will provide a much-needed boost during a crucial period for the sector. However, high temperatures are expected to curb midday shopping, with stronger activity anticipated in the morning and late afternoon. Peak tourism is also expected to support sales
Business estimates put total turnover during this year’s summer sales at €7-7.4 billion, representing nominal growth of 2% to 5% compared with last year.
“The summer sales are an important period for Greek commerce, giving businesses the opportunity to increase turnover while offering consumers better prices,” said Stavros Kafounis, president of the Hellenic Confederation of Commerce and Entrepreneurship (ESEE).
