Europe could be double-kneecapped should China choose to restrict access to its leading AI models

Europe has already found itself shut out of one of the most advanced AI models for cybersecurity, since the Trump administration ordered tech company Anthropic to deny non-US citizens access to its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 products – a decision that triggered alarm in the security sector and led to a flurry of calls for greater tech sovereignty.
But the bloc could be double-kneecapped should China choose to restrict access to its leading AIs. Such a scenario is not mere doom-mongering: a recent Reuters report indicates that Beijing might be planning just such a move as government officials met with several leading AI developers to discuss limiting the export of models.
Nor is it a vulnerability that has not been obvious for some time. One AI expert told Euractiv that Europe has been “fast asleep” despite multiple warnings.
