Where’s the backup to the backup?
Europe is facing the prospect of a digital “iron curtain” that could cut off access to leading-edge AIs, threatening to leave the bloc out in the cold on tech progress seen as essential for both economic prosperity and online security.
After Washington’s recent dalliance with restricting non-Americans’ access to the big US AI labs’ most advanced models – with no exception for European allies – Beijing may be considering limiting foreign access to China’s leading open-source AIs as well, according to a recent Reuters report.
Such a move would be very bad news for Europe, where Chinese models have been seen as a backup for US AIs.
Don’t call it a ‘wake-up call’
