White House is taking steps to limit who can access cutting-edge AI from US giants OpenAI and Anthropic
Europe is facing a crisis over access to leading-edge AI as Washington tells US tech giants to limit sharing of their most advanced models to “trusted partners” only.
Earlier this month, the US government ordered Anthropic not to provide its newest AI models – Mythos 5 and Fable 5 – to non-US citizens, prompting the company to shutter the models altogether to avoid falling foul of the order.
The blanket ban was amended on Friday, when the US Department of Commerce allowed Anthropic to share Mythos 5 with “trusted partners” – a list that reportedly contains only US companies and institutions.
Fable, meanwhile, appears to remain under the original US-citizens-only restriction.
