Under pressure from the US government, Europe risks being cut out of competitiveness gains from latest AI models

The AI race is on and Europe already looks to be left behind as the Trump administration has instructed companies leading in the technology to heavily restrict access to the latest models.

The move, announced earlier in June, only allows US companies and institutions (listed as “trusted partners”) to use the powerful tools, notably Anthropic’s Mythos 5 model and OpenAI’s ChatGPT 5.6.

Europe now risks being left in the cold, suffering a blow to competitiveness – notwithstanding the deep concerns that come with the widespread adoption of AI.

The development also highlights the capability gap with the US. France’s Mistral is the most advanced European AI developer but still lags far behind American rivals.
