Team Western Cape have been crownded champions of the 2026 SA Schools Winter Games.
Team Western Cape has cemented its status as the nation’s powerhouse in youth athletics, officially clinching the 2026 SA Schools Winter Games title for the fourth consecutive year. The impressive victory secures the province’s dominant position in the 2026 national school sport programme.
The road to victory was defined by grit and determination. After a challenging opening day that saw the team record 18 losses against just nine wins, Team Western Cape regrouped. Showing the resilience that has become a hallmark of their athletic programme, the athletes improved their performance on the second day, entering the final stage with a singular goal: converting qualifying performances into medals.
Their strategy paid off in the finals, where the team secured three gold, three silver, and one bronze medal. This outstanding performance propelled them ahead of fierce provincial rivals KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, securing the overall Winter Games title.
This latest win at the Winter Games has effectively secured the Western Cape’s standing as the overall 2026 SA School Sport Champions. Even with the Summer Games scheduled for December, the province has banked enough points to remain mathematically unbeatable in the current competition cycle.
