Chelsea FC is working through a familiar playbook: stockpile young talent, then figure out what to do with all of it. The latest name on the whiteboard is Marc Guiu, the Spanish forward who arrived from Barcelona in the summer of 2024 and now finds himself caught between a club with too many attackers and a career that needs consistent minutes.

The club is reportedly exploring both loan and permanent transfer options for Guiu, with a potential buy-back clause forming a key part of negotiations.

The development dilemma

Chelsea’s priority appears to be securing a domestic loan, ideally within the English leagues. Sunderland has reportedly been pursuing a loan agreement for Guiu, with reports indicating Chelsea reached a season-long loan agreement with the Championship club in August 2025. The Championship club would offer exactly the kind of environment Chelsea wants for the young forward: competitive football, high-pressure atmospheres, and a near-guarantee of regular starts.

Chelsea is also entertaining permanent transfer discussions, with the club’s valuation of Guiu sitting at around €50 million. That figure reflects the pedigree of a forward who came through Barcelona’s La Masia academy.
