Chelsea have numerous important decisions to make in the transfer market this summer. Choosing which strikers to move on will be principal among them. With Nicolas Jackson returning from a season-long loan at Bayern Munich, Chelsea have five strikers in the squad. That is clearly too many for new manager Xabi Alonso to work with, especially as they also plan to add another versatile attacker to the ranks.Unsurprisingly Joao Pedro, who scored 20 goals last season, is on the ‘not for sale’ list and is already assured of his place in the squad. But what are Chelsea going to do with the others? As the Transfer DealSheet revealed yesterday, the club are still weighing up which ones are going to be sold. Here, The Athletic considers who should stay and who could go.Nicolas JacksonIn a remarkable statement issued shortly after he had negotiated until the final hours of last summer’s transfer window to finalise a season-long loan deal away from Chelsea, Jackson’s agent Ali Barat described Bayern Munich as “a project that will allow (Jackson) to write the next chapter of his legacy”.The actual returns on his season in Munich were rather more modest. Bayern regularly fielded the most prolific attacking trio in Europe last season in Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz, leaving Jackson in the supporting role he had been unwilling to accept at Chelsea.Nicolas Jackson returns to Chelsea after a season out on loan at Bayern Munich (Stuart Franklin/Getty Images)Jackson fell well short of the 40 starts (not including the German Cup) needed to trigger Bayern’s €65million (£56.3, $76.1m) conditional obligation to buy him, but he did earn his Bundesliga winner’s medal by scoring eight goals in 23 appearances, or 0.71 goals per 90 minutes played. It was a reminder that Jackson can be a very helpful player in an elite squad, albeit not an indispensable one. His body of work far exceeds that of Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha or Marc Guiu and, even if his scoring touch remains erratic, his pressing, off-ball running and polished link-up play bring consistent value.Alonso appears at least keen to get a closer look at Jackson in pre-season. If he is prepared to accept a squad role, there is no doubt his return would improve Chelsea’s attacking options.Verdict: KeepLiam TwomeyLiam DelapA lot of people in the game thought the signing of Delap from Ipswich Town for £30million in June 2025 represented good business for Chelsea. It is a measure of how things have gone that they are considering selling him so soon. After a promising start at the FIFA Club World Cup and in the brief pre-season that followed, Delap’s form never recovered after he suffered a hamstring injury in the third Premier League game of term. A foolish red card on his return in a Carabao Cup tie at Wolverhampton Wanderers earned public condemnation from head coach Enzo Maresca, who started him just four times after that before leaving on January 1.
