SYRIZA lawmaker Giorgos Gavrilos has resigned from the troubled leftist party, becoming the latest MP to leave following the launch of former prime minister Alexis Tsipras’ new Greek Left Alliance (ELAS).

Gavrilos, who represents the Argolida constituency and headed SYRIZA’s labor and social security department, said he would remain in parliament as an independent.

In a statement, he said SYRIZA had “completed its historical cycle” and “can no longer respond in a meaningful way to the basic social need for political change.”

The end of the New Democracy government cannot be a matter for closed party organs, personal strategies or agreements between party leaderships, he added.

His resignation came hours after Achaia MP Andreas Panagiotopoulos also quit the party to sit as an independent.
