SYRIZA MP Giorgos Karameros has resigned from both the party and his parliamentary seat, declaring his support for former prime minister Alexis Tsipras and his newly formed Greek Left Alliance (ELAS).

Karameros informed SYRIZA president Sokratis Famellos of his decision before submitting his resignation from the party and announcing that he would also relinquish his seat in parliament.

“I will remain on this front line from now on, but as an active citizen, a simple ‘soldier’ in the necessary victorious progressive alliance of social democracy, the left and political ecology,” Karameros, who was first elected in 2023, said.

Karameros said he had supported Tsipras’ initiative from the outset and believed the creation of ELAS offered “a perspective for Greece.”

Tsipras, who led SYRIZA until 2023, has repeatedly said that, before joining his new party, current lawmakers must surrender their seats.
