The party is polling well below the threshold required to enter the next parliament
Greece’s leftist Syriza party is on the brink of collapse after its former leader Alexis Tsipras’ decision to establish a new political party once again reshuffled the cards in Athens.
Tsipras took over Syriza in 2008, when the party was polling at around 5%, and led it to power in 2015 after securing 36% of the vote. After Tsipras lost the 2019 elections and resigned as party leader, Syriza entered a downward spiral, while the wider Greek left continued to fragment.
The party is currently polling at around 1.5%, well below the 3% threshold required to enter the next parliament.
Tsipras has broken with Syriza to launch the new ELAS party, now polling second and emerging as the main challenger to the conservative New Democracy, led by the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
