Leftist opposition party SYRIZA faces a severe crisis as lawmakers steadily exit, mostly joining independent ranks.
MPs Andreas Panagiotopoulos, Giorgos Gavrilos, and Giorgos Psychogios chose independence, protesting SYRIZA’s decision to run a ballot opposing ELAS. Following a Monday meeting of dissenting lawmakers, the parliamentary group plans to elect a new president next week.
Only eight to 10 MPs are expected to vote due to anticipated departures.
The leadership battle between Rena Dourou and Pavlos Polakis has intensified. Polakis claimed Dourou cannot get SYRIZA into Parliament, asserting he can, “with a decent percentage.”
Meanwhile, a tsunami of further departures is expected by Friday as the group meets to elect a new secretary, likely Giannis Amanatidis.
