The decision follows intense heatwaves, including a record-breaking 37.7C in the UK, prompting Eurostar to enhance the air conditioning capabilities of its new trains. The international rail operator upgraded its order with French manufacturer Alstom for up to 50 new double-decker all-electric “Celestia” trains. Originally, the new trains were specified with air conditioning capable of operating up to 45C, but this has been increased to 55C to future-proof the fleet. These new trains are expected to enter service in 2031 and run into the 2060s, with Eurostar's chief executive stating the upgrade is a necessary investment for their long lifespan.
