Civil society organisations fear the newly established Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) Ombud may lack genuine autonomy, as it relies on the ministry for core resources like funding and staff appointments.
Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi on Friday announced the launch of the IDAC Ombud Office, which will be led by retired Gauteng High Court Judge Takalani Joseph Raulinga, who has been appointed for a five-year term.
The office is expected to provide independent oversight, probing complaints against IDAC officials for abuse of power, improper conduct, or rights violations.
Kubayi said the office was established via Section 22A of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Act of 1998, following consultation with the Chief Justice.
