Scores of people, mostly women, laid siege to a Tasmac shop at Anaiyur near Sivakasi on Monday, demanding its immediate closure.The people from Anaiyur, Ayyampatti, Lakshmiyapuram, Gandhi Nagar and Mutharaiyar Nagar squatted near the shop. They said the people of these places had submitted many petitions seeking the closure of the liquor shop as it was causing a lot of inconvenience to the local people, especially women and children.Since the officials concerned did not take any action, they resorted to the protest. The protesters prevented the Tasmac employees from opening the shop.However, after prolonged talks held by the officials, the protesters dispersed. They have given an ultimatum of one month for removal of the Tasmac shop from the area to the officials.Similarly, over 30 women residents of villages which come under Rengappanaickenpatti panchayat in Batlagundu in Dindigul district submitted a petition to the Dindigul Collector on Monday, opposing the opening of a Tasmac shop in the area.Residents from Sandaiyur and Thathapatti villages staged a protest in front of the Collectorate and submitted a petition with regard to the issue. They said the Tasmac outlet, which was previously operating in Kamatchipuram, was closed due to inconvenience it caused to the public. However, there were plans to reopen it in their area.They said the Tasmac shop posed a threat to the safety of the public, especially women and children.
