Residents of Poonachi near Ammapettai staged a road blockade on the Ammapettai-Anthiyur Road on Friday (May 15, 2026) morning seeking the removal of a Tasmac liquor outlet functioning at the local bus stop.
More than 100 persons, including women, participated in the protest, leading to disruption of vehicular traffic for some time. The protesters said Tasmac shop number 3802 was functioning at the Poonachi bus stop and was located about 400 metres from a government school. They alleged that the location of the shop had resulted in frequent accidents in the area, causing injuries and fatalities.

Residents claimed that several petitions had already been submitted to the authorities seeking removal of the outlet, but no action had been taken.
The protesters resorted to the road blockade around 8.30 a.m., demanding immediate closure or relocation of the outlet. Revenue officials and police personnel held talks with the protesters. The agitation was withdrawn after officials assured the residents that their demand would be forwarded to higher authorities.
