Residents of S. Ramachandrapuram and Rengappanaickenpatti sitting on a day-long hunger strike demanding to remove a Tasmac shop located near a school and temple at S. Ramachandrapuram near Watrap on Sunday.

Scores of men and women from S. Ramachandrapuram and Rengappanaickenpatti went on a fast at S. Ramachandrapuram protesting against the official apathy in removing a Tasmac shop that was posing danger to schoolchildren and those going to the nearby Murugan temple on Sunday.The people said that several petitions had been given to the officials demanding shifting the Tasmac shop out of S. Ramachandrapuram that is located on Krishnankoil-Watrap Main Road, as it is posing a lot of inconvenience to women and students, especially girls.“The shop was originally allocated to W. Pudupatti Town panchayat. However, after a series of group clashes in W. Pudupatti, the Tasmac shop got shifted to S. Ramachandrapuram. The shop is locate just next to the bus stop that is used by hundreds of children, including girl students of a higher secondary school,” said Naam Tamilar Katchi functionary A. Narayanan.An advocate, K. Balan, said that the grama sabha of S. Ramachandrapuram panchayat has passed several resolutions over the years demanding to remove the Tasmac shop. Petitions have been repeatedly given to the Collector, Tahsildar and the police officials. However, no action has been taken, he said.Mr. Narayanan said that drunkards create nuisance every day. “The women and children fear to go to the bus stop as any day some or other drunk person is found sleeping at the bus stop in a shabbily dressed manner,” he said.After the TVK Government announced removing of Tasmac shops located in close proximity to schools and temples, the Naam Tamilar Katchi organised a demonstration with specific demand to remove this shop too.Since people from several villages come to consume liquor at this bus stop, the local people wanted to remove it.
