Residents and members of the Democratic Women’s Association staged a sit-in protest in Anthiyur on Tuesday (June 9, 2026) demanding the relocation of a Tasmac outlet near the Government Hospital, alleging that it caused traffic congestion and inconvenience to the public. The outlet, located on the road leading to Pudukadu, has witnessed heavy patronage following the closure of other Tasmac shops in Anthiyur town. Residents said more than 1,000 people visited the outlet daily. They alleged that two-wheelers parked on either side of the road between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. narrowed the carriageway, resulting in traffic bottlenecks. The presence of large numbers of customers also caused hardship to commuters and residents of the locality, they said.Following the protest, Tasmac Deputy Manager Ravichandran, Anthiyur Tahsildar Elanchezhiyan and Inspector Shanmugavelu held talks with the protesters. During the discussions, officials sought three months’ time to shift the outlet. The proposal was opposed by the protesters, who expressed displeasure over the delay and urged the authorities to relocate the shop immediately. The discussions continued for some time before officials assured the protesters that steps would be taken to remove the outlet within a week. Following the assurance, more than 30 protesters dispersed after withdrawing the protest. Published - June 09, 2026 07:54 pm IST
