'Not a single sanction works in Bulgaria,' the sanctioned oligarch Peevski said
SOFIA – Hundreds of flights taken by US- and UK-sanctioned Bulgarian oligarch Delyan Peevski have triggered questions over how far sanctions constrain one of Bulgaria’s most powerful politicians.
Peevski has been under US sanctions since 2021 and blacklisted by Britain since 2023 for his role in public corruption and bribery, though he publicly boasts he is untouchable.
He plays a prominent, controversial role in his country’s politics as an MP and as the leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), a political party, with two MEPs in Brussels.
Despite the US and UK sanctions, which include entry bans, Peevski’s name appears in hundreds of flight records held by Bulgaria’s interior ministry and obtained by the investigative outlet Izvan Efir.
