Residents from Ward 99 and neighbouring communities march to Parliament on Friday to demand urgent action on longstanding electricity shortages and outages affecting their communities.
Residents from Ward 99 and neighbouring communities were left frustrated on Friday after marching to Parliament to hand over a memorandum, demanding urgent action on longstanding electricity problems, only to find no officials available to receive them.
The protest, led by Ward 99 ANC Councillor Lonwabo Mqina, called for the installation of electricity infrastructure in informal settlements and a reliable, uninterrupted electricity supply for communities that have endured prolonged outages.
Mqina said residents had informed Parliament in advance of the march and expected officials to be present to receive their memorandum.
"We are so disappointed that we arrived at Parliament and there is no one here to receive us, to receive our memorandum. There are no staff members, no officials, no minister. Residents were disheartened and angry to find that Parliament did not even leave a note for us even though we made arrangements," said Mqina.
