A Khayelitsha resident holds a placard claiming their community has been without electricity for seven years during a service delivery march to Parliament in Cape Town.
A debate on service delivery in the Western Cape Provincial Legislature coincided with a march by residents from across Khayelitsha to Parliament on Thursday, as communities called for improved access to basic municipal services that they say have remained unresolved for years.
The demonstration, led by various ward councillors, including Ward 99 councillor Lonwabo Mqina, together with other community leaders, brought together residents from different wards in Khayelitsha.
According to the organisers, the march sought to highlight longstanding service delivery concerns, including access to affordable electricity, reliable water and sanitation services, decent housing, improved street lighting, and the upgrading of cemeteries.
The issues raised during the march mirror many of the findings contained in a recent Public Protector report into service delivery complaints affecting Langa and Khayelitsha.
