Sewage flowing from a blocked manhole in Tongaat.

As citizens in eThekwini grapple with deteriorating municipal services, the community is uniting in a clarion call for accountability and urgent reforms following the local government elections on November 4.

Ratepayer, civic and resident associations have expressed deep concern about the ongoing collapse of municipal services, highlighting pressing issues such as crumbling infrastructure, erratic supply of water and electricity, and an alarming backlog in maintaining vital facilities.

Harold Maistry, president of the Tongaat Civic Association, condemned the ongoing collapse of municipal services in eThekwini.

“Residents of Tongaat are faced with decaying infrastructure, sewage spills, and erratic supply of water and electricity . Furthermore, we have a crematorium which has been non-functional for more than three years, unkempt municipal facilities such as sports centres, municipal halls and a dysfunctional billing system.”
