Hundreds of Khayelitsha residents from several wards march through the streets of Cape Town towards Parliament, calling for improved service delivery, including housing, electricity, water, and sanitation.
Residents from across Khayelitsha marched to Parliament on Thursday, demanding action over years of unresolved service delivery failures as the Western Cape Provincial Legislature debated the state of municipal services in the province.
The demonstration, led by several ward councillors, including Ward 99 councillor Lonwabo Mqina, brought together residents from different parts of Khayelitsha who say they have endured years of poor service delivery, including unreliable electricity and water supply, inadequate sanitation, housing shortages, poor street lighting and neglected cemeteries.
The march echoed many of the findings contained in a recent Public Protector report into service delivery complaints in Langa and Khayelitsha, which identified shortcomings in housing, sanitation, infrastructure and governance, and called on the City of Cape Town and other authorities to address them.
