An Athens court has sentenced two police officers to prison terms of four years and four years and five months after convicting them of raping a 19-year-old woman in the changing room of a central Athens police station in 2022.
However, Athens Mixed Jury Court suspended both sentences pending appeal.
Recognizing the mitigating circumstance of the defendants’ previously law-abiding lives, the court imposing no additional conditions on their release.
The officers, stationed at Omonia police station, were found guilty by a 4-3 majority. The court also reduced the original charge from gang rape, which carries a potential life sentence, to joint rape.
One of the defendants was also unanimously convicted of unlawfully processing personal data after recording the assault with a camera concealed in a bag.
