Leftist SYRIZA has postponed an extraordinary meeting of its central committee scheduled for Saturday, following the resignation of Sokratis Famellos from the leadership of the party.
According to a party statement, the political secretariat will meet on Monday afternoon to begin the process of electing a new leader as well as to plan the convening of the central committee.
While the party’s so-called internal opposition wished for the central committee to proceed as planned, the party’s interim leader Anastasia Sapouna was reportedly in favor of postponing it.
Famellos resigned Thursday, as the party faces internal divisions and questions over its future.
His resignation comes amid continued fragmentation on Greece’s left, following the 2023 breakaway that formed the New Left party and the recent launch of former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ Greek Left Alliance (ELAS).
