As part surprise checks conducted across several border districts of Tamil Nadu, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption police seized ₹35,750 from Kumily, Mundal and Bodimettu check-posts in Theni district on Friday.Following complaints of demand for bribe from motorists at inter-state borders, the DVAC officials conducted the checks at the check-posts.The DVAC sleuths, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Nagaraj, conducted the checks after several vehicles passed through the check-posts. Following the seizure of the ‘unaccounted cash’, the police personnel on duty at the check-posts were given time to submit their explanation for the possession of the cash.The officials said seven personnel in the three check-posts were found to be “negligent”. The DVAC would write to the government recommending departmental action against them.It is said that at Mundal check-post, construction materials were transported in large quantities and though the truck operators had valid documents, the police personnel demanded bribe.Similarly, there were allegations of demand for money from private taxis and goods vehicles from other States under some pretext, the officials said, adding that they seized ₹26,460 from Kumily check-post, ₹3,500 from Mundal and ₹5,790 from Bodimettu.
