A three-storeyed commercial building that encroached an OSR land at Balaji Nagar near Avarampalayam in Coimbatore city was demolished on Friday.

The Hindu BureauThe Coimbatore Corporation on Friday began demolishing a three-storey commercial building constructed on encroached Open Space Reservation (OSR) land in Balaji Nagar near Avarampalayam after the Supreme Court upheld the civic body’s move to reclaim the property.Corporation officials said the seven-cent property, valued at around ₹3 crore, was earmarked as an OSR site in a layout approved by the Town and Country Planning Department in 1971. The land was encroached upon more than two decades ago, following which a commercial building with a built-up area of about 11,000 sq. ft. was constructed and leased out.The Corporation filed a case before the Madras High Court in 2016 seeking recovery of the land. The High Court directed the civic body to reclaim the property, following which the occupants challenged the order before the Supreme Court. The apex court upheld the High Court’s ruling and dismissed the appeal, enabling the Corporation to proceed with the eviction.The Corporation subsequently issued notices to the commercial establishments functioning in the building before initiating the demolition on Friday (July 10, 2026) under the supervision of officials from its Town Planning wing.
