Women's boxing will take centre stage in Cape Town next month as some of South Africa's leading fighters bid to make history at the aptly named Fight Like a Woman tournament.
Staged at the GrandWest Grand Arena on August 8 — the night before National Women's Day — the Battle at the Island promotion will feature an unprecedented five women's championship bouts, underlining the rapid growth of the women's game in a sport traditionally dominated by men.
Headlining the blockbuster bill is Simangele "Smash" Hadebe, who will trade leather with Owethu Rula for the vacant WBF world flyweight title in what the experienced campaigner describes as the pinnacle opportunity of her career. The reigning national and WBO Africa champion enters the contest determined to turn the page after her defeat to Sibulele Soboois earlier this year, insisting her focus is firmly fixed on the future.
"Every fight is a new chapter," Hadebe told Independent Media Sport exclusively this week. "I've learned valuable lessons from every experience in my career, including that loss. My focus isn't on the past; it's on becoming a better boxer, making the most of this opportunity, and showing the best version of myself in the ring."
