There was an eerie parallel running through Cape Town’s MMA scene this past weekend — one that made Barebones Mixed Martial Arts 8: New Order feel even more special than it already was.
On the surface, the event delivered exactly what fans have come to expect from Barebones MC: high-level action, drama, rising stars, and proof that South African MMA’s pipeline is healthier than ever.
The 19-fight card at the Sunningdale Sports Complex in Milnerton had everything: knockouts, submissions, breakout performances, and a sold-out crowd that stayed roaring from the opening bout to the final bell, entertaining the masses with no need for Maximus Decimus Meridius to even pose that infamous question, judging by the thunderous applause.
But beneath all the excitement, one fight carried a strangely familiar feeling.
