Kerry-Anne Allerston

Every now and then, something or someone moves you. They enter your life and change everything. In this case, I’m referring to Annette Herholdt.

Annette first played in a band with Dave De Vetta before becoming the legendary drummer for No Friends of Harry. Her bandmates still speak about her with so much love and admiration, and they credit much of the band’s unique sound to Annette and her brilliance behind the kit.

Musicians talk about her playing with enormous respect and affection, and I never grow tired of hearing beautiful stories about kind people. There just isn’t enough love going around these days, so whenever I get the chance to hear someone tell a special story about another person, whether I know them or not, I jump at it. I love love, and I love love stories.

This is one of those stories. It’s about a girl and a few dudes who met, clicked and started a band. That band became one of the most important bands ever to come out of South Africa. They were No Friends of Harry. They toured internationally and made waves wherever they went. They stood out and stood up for what they believed in. They fought for those who couldn’t fight for themselves and they were fearless. Nothing was ever too big a mission and everything was gloriously over the top. They were unstoppable and they were trailblazers.
