Authorities in Ukraine's Ivano-Frankivsk region have uncovered a fraudulent scheme involving state financial assistance intended for the families of military personnel listed as missing in action.
According to Ukrinform, the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Police announced the case on Facebook.
"Police officers in the Ivano-Frankivsk region uncovered a fraudulent scheme involving the illegal receipt of state payments intended for families of servicemen considered missing in action. According to the investigation, a resident of the Kolomyia district took advantage of the fact that her son had mistakenly been granted missing-in-action status. Knowing that he had voluntarily left his military unit and was staying at home, she applied for the payments and unlawfully received state funds for nearly a year," the police said.
Law enforcement officials estimate that the total financial damage to the state exceeded UAH 800,000.
