Ukraine continues efforts to determine the fate of missing service members and identify the remains of fallen soldiers, including some who have been listed as missing since 2014.

Taras Tarasenko, deputy head of the investigative department and chief of the unit for investigating crimes against life and health at the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Kirovohrad region, said this in an interview with Ukrinform.

"Sometimes we are able to establish a person's fate within a matter of days. But there are cases where we have no information for years. Some investigations date back to 2014 and still remain unresolved. One reason is that not all bodies returned during repatriation have been identified. Even now, in 2026, we are continuing to identify bodies that were repatriated in previous years," Tarasenko said.

Police continue to examine remains returned during earlier repatriation operations. As an example of recent progress, Tarasenko cited the identification of a person who had been considered missing since 2023. The body was returned during a later repatriation, but the individual's identity was only confirmed recently.
