Memorial to be held for young Mitchells Plain footballer who died during league match

A memorial service will be held on Thursday evening at Merrydale Primary School for 20-year-old Standards United FC player Naeem Toyer, who died during a Second Division League fixture at the Westridge Sports Complex on Saturday.

The Mitchells Plain football community has been left devastated after Toyer collapsed during active play, leaving teammates, opponents, officials and spectators in shock.

The Mitchells Plain Local Football Association confirmed that match officials, club representatives, first-aid personnel and members of the Local Executive Committee responded immediately.

Emergency medical services were called, while those on the scene tried to assist him. Despite their efforts, Toyer died on the field.
