The Mitchell's Plain football community is heartbroken over the tragic loss of 20-year-old Naeem Toyer, a beloved player of Standards United FC, who died away during a league match at Westridge Sports Complex.
The Local Football Association (LFA) Mitchell's Plain said Toyer died on Saturday despite immediate efforts by match officials, club officials, first-aid personnel, Local Executive Committee members, and community members to secure emergency medical assistance.
"LFA Mitchell's Plain, member clubs, players, officials, and the entire football fraternity are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Mr Na-eem Toyer," General Secretary Petra Loff said.
Remembered for his sweet smile, humble nature and talent on the football field, Na-eem Toyer touched the lives of teammates, friends and family both on and off the pitch.
