The eThekwini Fire Municipality is set to spend R63.5 million on revamping the Jacobs Fire Station, south of Durban.

The Jacobs Fire Station, south of Durban, that is presently out of commission and in close proximity to some of the city's key heavy industries and dense residential areas, is set to undergo a multi-million transformation to improve its service delivery output.

The eThekwini Municipality has planned to spend R63.5 million, over three financial terms, which will include the demolition of the existing facility and a modern rebuild, and the the design and planning process for the project was at an advanced stage.

A report before the municipality's council on Tuesday confirmed that the station premises was currently closed due to its poor and uninhabitable condition since the April 2022 floods. The property is valued at R6.4 million.

The municipal fire service directorate engaged the municipal architecture directorate to assess the condition of the Jacobs Fire Station and determine the extent of renovations required to restore the facility to an acceptable operational standard.
