The eThekwini Municipality will spend R63.5 million over three financial years to demolish and rebuild a modern Jacobs Fire Station, south of Durban.
A report before the council on Tuesday outlined that the station premises are a municipal facility currently closed due to their poor and uninhabitable condition since the April 2022 floods. The property is valued at R6.4 million. The municipality said the design and planning process for the reconstruction has commenced and is at an advanced stage.
The municipal fire service directorate engaged the municipal architecture directorate to assess the condition of the Jacobs Fire Station and determine the extent of renovations required to restore the facility to an acceptable operational standard.
The assessment intended to establish whether the existing infrastructure could be rehabilitated to adequately support the delivery of fire and emergency services within the precinct. The municipality considered that the existing facilities are not conducive to the efficient and effective functioning of a strategically located and critically important fire station.
