More than 535 solar-powered streetlights have already been installed in Johannesburg's CBD as part of a R22 million initiative to improve safety and support inner-city regeneration.
A major solar streetlighting project aimed at improving safety, visibility and economic activity is being rolled out across Johannesburg's inner city, with 2 160 solar-powered streetlights planned for the central business district.
The initiative is being implemented by the non-profit urban renewal organisation Jozi My Jozi, with funding from the FirstRand Foundation.
The project includes the installation of solar-powered streetlights fitted with integrated cameras in high-traffic and vulnerable areas across the CBD.
According to the project partners, the lighting system is designed to convert three hours of sunlight into up to 40 hours of continuous illumination, providing a low-cost alternative to conventional street lighting.
