Greater Athens regional authorities have finished installing 388 new traffic cameras at 100 junctions, designed to record and fine motorists running red lights.
The Italian-made cameras will be mounted on new pylons and positioned to monitor the rear ends of vehicles approaching the lights.
They will be activated the moment the light turns red. Workmen are painting white lines in front of the traffic lights, and any vehicle that crosses these lines once the light turns red will be photographed and fined.
They are intended to come into operation gradually, with the first 100 ready by August.
Data recorded by the cameras will be checked by traffic police personnel for final verification before violations are officially registered. If verified, the fines will be forwarded to motorists’ phones or through the gov.gr platform.
