Police have launched a new traffic management platform aimed at improving traffic flow and speeding responses to road incidents across the Athens metropolitan area.
The system, called Traffic Commander, integrates real-time data from traffic cameras, drones, road sensors, accident reports and weather conditions, giving the police’s operations center a live overview of the road network.
Authorities said the platform is designed to detect congestion more quickly, improve coordination of traffic police and reduce delays following accidents or other disruptions.
Traffic Commander is linked to the Attica regional traffic management center, allowing authorities to adjust traffic signals in real time.
When needed, operators can implement a “green wave” system, synchronizing traffic lights to provide continuous green signals along key routes and ease congestion.
