Police unveiled a new digital system Tuesday for issuing traffic violation citations, using smartphones to speed up enforcement and cut paperwork. The system also links to gov.gr databases.
Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis presented the system at Greek police headquarters, highlighting 390 new smartphones donated by Motor Oil Hellas and Nova Telecommunications – 250 for the Attica traffic police, 60 for Thessaloniki and the rest for the Immediate Action unit.
The devices let officers check vehicle and driver records in real time, issue digital citations and notify drivers instantly, reducing errors from manual paperwork. “The Hellenic Police has entered a new era,” Chrysochoidis said, adding the tools would help make Greece safer.
Attica traffic police director Sotirios Kaltabanis said fatal accidents fell 42% in the first half of 2026, while breathalyzer tests rose to 720,258 from 78,975, with fewer positive results.
