Regional authorities in Greece’s capital said Thursday they have completed the installation of 388 traffic cameras at signalized intersections across the Athens metropolitan area, with the system awaiting final government approval before it can begin operating.
The cameras are designed to detect drivers who run red lights, a violation that regional officials described as one of the leading causes of serious road accidents.
Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias said the project is intended to improve road safety rather than generate revenue through fines.
“We made it clear from the outset that this is not a revenue-raising measure,” Hardalias said. “It is a project focused on prevention, accountability and protecting human life.”
He called on the central government and the relevant ministries to complete the remaining administrative procedures so the system can be put into operation, saying every day of delay is “a day lost for road safety.”
