The Attica regional government has completed the installation of 388 cameras designed to detect red-light violations at selected intersections across the Athens metropolitan area, a project funded through the Recovery and Resilience Facility under a road-safety program. Locations were identified by traffic police based on accident patterns and operational experience at high-risk junctions.
Operating around the clock, the cameras will record only red-light offenses and transmit six photographs and one video to the Hellenic Police as evidence. Authorities said safeguards were included so vehicle occupants cannot be identified.
Officials plan to connect the cameras to the national digital traffic-violation system, with the first 100 expected to be linked by August, after which recording and fines are to begin.
Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias described the system as a tool to strengthen road safety, calling red-light running among the most dangerous behaviors on the road.
The cameras form part of a broader Attica road-safety strategy encompassing 31 projects worth €192.9 million. Eighteen projects are underway or tendered.
