South Africa Rugby has hit out at what it describes as “erroneous and misinformed” suggestions that Ellis Park would be far from full for the Nations Championship clash with England rugby. The Springboks take on Steve Borthwick’s side in their opening fixture of the new competition in Johannesburg in England’s first visit for eight years.Reports had suggested, though, that the spiritual home of South African rugby would be far from full for the encounter after ticket prices were initially set high for the fixture. It is a busy period of international action for Rassie Erasmus’ world champions, with clashes to come with Wales and Scotland in July before three Tests on home soil against New Zealand as part of the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series. But SA Rugby insists that it is hopeful that Ellis Park will be close to full for the arrival of England.“Predictions that the attendance would be little more than 21 000 were entirely erroneous and misinformed,” it said in a statement. “SA Rugby hopes to get close to the historic average against England in SA of 91% of the stadiums’ capacity in a market in which tickets are on sale for four Test matches and two provincial matches against the touring All Blacks.“Assertions of lack of interest are unfounded and not supported by the actual sales data.”England are on a four-match losing streak after their worst-ever Six Nations campaign, and face a daunting challenge against the Springboks.
