The police on Thursday arrested three persons on charge of assaulting a 19-year-old college student and ransacking her house at Valukkuparai near Madukkarai in Coimbatore district, apart from stealing cash and gold.The arrested have been identified as P. Maniyarasu (46), his relatives M. Chandru (25) and S. Sabari (25), residents of Ramar Kovil Street at Valukkuparai.According to the police, Maniyarasu’s son Surya and the girl student from the same locality had been friends. Surya and Narendran from the same area allegedly intercepted and assaulted the girl when she was walking to her residence from the bus stop on Tuesday evening. The duo reportedly snatched her college identity card, verbally abused her and threatened her, allegedly after she stopped talking to him.The girl’s father questioned the duo and informed them that he would file a complaint against them.As the girl and family members went to the police station, Surya, Maniyarasu, Narendran, Chandru, Sabari and their associates trespassed into the student’s house. They ransacked the house and stole ₹1,50,000 gold earrings weighing about two grams from a shelf, said the police.The affected family also complained that the accused issued death threats to the student and family members.The Madukkarai police registered a case in connection with the incident and launched an investigation. They arrested Maniyarasu, Chandru and Sabari on Thursday and they were remanded in judicial custody.The police said that Surya was undergoing treatment in a hospital and efforts are on to arrest others involved in the crime.
