A Lagos-based activist, Comrade Ayoyinka Oni, has alleged that the arrest of activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, was politically motivated, claiming it was intended to weaken opposition activities and prevent protests against insecurity under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

In a Facebook post, Oni argued that the Tinubu administration fears both political opposition and mass protests, stating that officials within the government are determined to retain power because they could face scrutiny over alleged corruption, nepotism and injustice if there is a change in government.

According to Oni, the government's efforts to weaken opposition include ongoing court cases involving political actors and attempts to deregister opposition political parties through the Independent National Electoral Commission.

He claimed the actions were designed to divide opposition parties and reduce their electoral chances.
